How Long Does SEO Take for a Local Business?
The Short Answer
Most local businesses start seeing measurable ranking movement between 3 and 6 months. Meaningful traffic growth, the kind that shows up in your leads, typically takes 6 to 12 months. If someone tells you SEO works in 30 days, they’re describing something other than SEO.
That said, timelines vary a lot based on your starting point, your market, and how competitive your category is. Here’s what actually drives the difference.
The First 90 Days: Fixing What’s Broken
The first three months of a real SEO engagement are mostly cleanup and infrastructure. That means a technical audit, fixing indexing problems, building out or correcting your Google Business Profile, adding schema markup, and often rewriting service page content that’s too thin or duplicated across pages.
You won’t see big traffic jumps in this window. What you’re doing is making your site legible to Google, which has to happen before rankings can improve. Think of it as foundation work before the frame goes up.
Months 3–6: Early Movement
This is where you start seeing ranking shifts, usually on lower-competition terms first. A landscaping company in Colorado Springs might start ranking on page one for “lawn care Monument CO” before they crack the top 10 for “landscaping Colorado Springs.”
GBP improvements often show results faster than organic rankings. Profile views, direction requests, and calls from the map pack can pick up within 60 to 90 days of consistent optimization.
Months 6–12: Real Traction
By six months, a well-executed local SEO campaign should be showing clear ranking progress across your target keywords and some measurable lift in organic traffic. Whether that translates to more leads depends on your conversion setup, call tracking, and whether your site actually convinces people to reach out once they land on it.
This is also where content starts to compound. Blog posts and service pages written in month two begin accumulating traffic by month eight. SEO has a slow startup and a strong back half.
What Speeds It Up
- A clean, well-structured site from the start. Technical debt adds months.
- An active, complete Google Business Profile. Businesses with photos, posts, and Q&A consistently outperform those with bare profiles.
- Consistent content. One blog post a month over 12 months outperforms a burst of 10 articles followed by nothing.
- Targeting the right geography. A plumber competing in Colorado Springs has a faster path than one targeting Denver metro from scratch.
What Slows It Down
- A history of spammy tactics from a previous agency. Google’s trust takes time to rebuild.
- Duplicate content across service pages. Very common on contractor sites, and it confuses search engines about which page to rank.
- No GBP, or a suspended GBP. Without a functioning profile, local pack visibility is off the table.
- Extremely competitive categories, like personal injury law or emergency plumbing, where established sites have years of authority built up.

Google’s AI Overviews and AI Mode pull from the same index as regular search. That means the same work that improves your organic rankings also improves your visibility in AI-generated answers. There’s no separate optimization track for AI search, and no shortcut that gets you there faster. The fundamentals are the same, and so is the timeline.
